All About Famous Memorials and Monuments of the U.S.
About Famous Memorials and Monuments of the U.S. How would we recall significant occasions? How might we best respect our dead? Would it be a good idea for us to pay tribute with sensible models of our legends? Or on the other hand, will the landmark be progressively significant and significant on the off chance that we pick theoretical structures? Some of the time the repulsiveness of occasions are excessively incredible to precisely speak to. The plan of a landmark or dedication is frequently more emblematic than a precise portrayal. Ground-breaking Memorials in the U.S. National September 11 Memorial, New York, NYU.S.S. Arizona, Honolulu, HIVietnam Veterans Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.Gateway Arch, St. Louis, MOMount Rushmore National Memorial, SD Frequently the most remarkable commemorations - the landmarks that mix compelling feeling - are encircled with debate. The dedications and landmarks recorded here show different ways draftsmen and architects have decided to respect saints, react to disasters, or remember significant occasions. The remembrance is there to give an encounter, Michael Arad has said. That experience, almost certainly, includes memory. It is nothing unexpected that the word remembrance originates from the Latin word memoria, which means memory. Design is memory. Dedications and landmarks recount to a story. To Honor and Remember People and Events What number of structures have you lived in? Where did you make your home when you were a youngster? when you previously went to class? first began to look all starry eyed at? Our recollections are inseparably tied with place. Occasions in our lives are for all time trapped with where they occurred. In any event, when all the subtleties might be fluffy, the feeling of spot is always with us. Engineering can be incredible markers of recollections, so directing that we in some cases intentionally make remembrances to respect and recall individuals and occasions. We may make an unrefined twig cross to honor a youth pet. The cut stone on a relatives internment site is worked to represent hundreds of years. Bronze plaques help a country to remember dauntlessness in face of misfortune. Solid tombs can outwardly introduce the extent of catastrophes. How would we use design to communicate misfortune and trust in restoration? Does it bode well to burn through a large number of dollars building September 11 dedications? How we go through our cash is a progressing banter for families, countries, and foundations. The First Monuments and Memorials The most punctual manifestations worked by man for purposes other than cover were profound in natureâ -landmarks to higher forces and remembrances to respect the dead. One thinks about the ancient Stonehenge in Britain and the Grecian Parthenon worked in 432 B.C. for the goddess Athena. The main commemorations may have been the extraordinary pyramids in Egypt, the tombs of the incredible lords and pharaohs. Generally, people recall occasions identified with war. As inborn clashes became wars between country expresses, the victors have fabricated landmarks to their triumphs. Landmarks planned as curves can be followed back to the triumphal curves of Rome, for example, the Arch of Titus (A.D. 82) and theà Arch of Constantine (A.D. 315). These Roman curves impacted nineteenth and twentieth century war dedications around the globe, including one of the most acclaimed triumphal curves, the 1836 Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. American War Memorials and Monuments The 1842 Bunker Hill Memorial close to Boston, Massachusetts memorializes the American Revolution and the fight that occurred on this hallowed ground. In the United States, battlegrounds themselves are frequently viewed as the commemoration. All through American history, remembrance engineering has been constructed both locally and broadly. American Civil War: Monuments to Civil War saints keep on separating the country. Networks and gatherings who had raised landmarks to Confederate war legends of the nineteenth century found these remembrances being evacuated in the 21st centuryâ -recalling a culture of subjection and racial oppression got untolerable to a general public battling with inclusion.à Architecture can mix feelings and discussion. Less disputable is the 1866 Civil War Unknowns Monument, the primary Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. It is a mass grave of more than 2,000 officers, both Union and Confederate, whose bones and bodies were gotten after grisly fights. The tomb is recorded in stone: Underneath this stone rest the bones of 2,000 one hundred and eleven obscure warriors accumulated after the war from the fields of Bull Run, and the course to the Rappahanock, their remaining parts couldn't be distinguished. Be that as it may, their names and passings are recorded in the files of their nation, and its thankful residents respect them as of their honorable armed force of saints. May they find happiness in the hereafter! September. A. D. 1866. World War I: A National World War I Memorial considered The Weight of Sacrifice formally denotes the 100th commemoration of the finish of WWI as it is committed on November 11, 2018. The dedication plan rivalry was won by the Chicago-based planner Joseph Weishaar and New York City stone worker Sabin Howard. The remembrance in Washington, DCs Pershing Park is the primary national landmark to this war occasion. The 1926 Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri had been viewed as a national remembrance in view of the quantity of troopers who went through the city on their approach to war. The District of Columbia War Memorial in Washington, D.C. is viewed as a neighborhood landmark. World War II:à Dedicated in 2004, the National World War II Memorial is situated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Friedrich St.Florian, the Austrian-conceived planner, won the opposition with his profoundly emblematic structure. Not far off from St.Florians dedication is the famous Iwo Jima Memorial. Close to Arlington National Cemetery, the sculpture repeats a powerful photo delineating a significant occasion in WWII Pacific War history. The 1954 sculpture, be that as it may, is truly called the United States Marine Corps War Memorial and is committed to all Marines who have given their lives with regards to the United States since 1775. Also, the close by 2006 United States Air Force Memorialâ and the 1987 United States Navy Memorial respect those military branches. The repulsions of WWII may best be delineated at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a 1962 exhibition hall worked over the frame of a submerged war vessel. Keeping the vestiges of war has been a well known approach to dazzle recollections of war on people in the future. In Hiroshima, Japan the Atomic Bomb Dome, the remaining parts of a structure from the 1945 nuclear bomb assault, is vital to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Korean War: The Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was committed July 27, 1995, decades after the 1953 peace negotiation. In contrast to different remembrances, the Korean War Veterans Memorial praises the about 6,000,000 Americans who served during the three-year struggle and not simply the people who gave their lives. Vietnam War: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall - the questionable plan by planner Maya Lin - was committed in 1982 and stays one of the most visited destinations in Washington, D.C. One of its most enthusiastic interests is the intelligent idea of the engraved stone, where a watchers picture can truly be thought about while mirroring the names of the dead and missing. A bronze sculpture of three fighters was included 1964 and theà Vietnam Womens Memorial sculpture was included 1993. Fear mongering: another kind of war for the United States is undeclared, yet the ghastliness of psychological warfare is everpresent. Michael Arads vision for a National September 11 Memorial in New York City mirrors the nonattendance of what once existed - the two structures and individuals are to be recalled. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a 90-foot wind toll called the Tower of Voices houses 40 tonal cylinders that sing together as the voices of the 40 travelers and team of United Flight 93. September 11 commemorations regularly use imagery to respect spot and individuals. <img information srcset=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/JxZguNPiWAHzm-OTNbzpxG3YMk4=/300x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/design voices-shanksville-1029999682-crop-5b96945f46e0fb002541183a.jpg 300w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/iTLTEQZQaCQy3f6oiz304QoeWa0=/1089x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/engineering voices-shanksville-1029999682-crop-5b96945f46e0fb002541183a.jpg 1089w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/ - EFmVymsgD7ww8uXjaKzlp5SYwg=/1878x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/design voices-shanksville-1029999682-crop-5b96945f46e0fb002541183a.jpg 1878w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/h2SgmkkYDyqcv_Ag0K8RC2qWKsU=/3457x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/design voices-shanksville-1029999682-crop-5b96945f46e0fb002541183a.jpg 3457w information src=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/r-I2ybxtu7_WQR01t7qDcbXC5h4=/3457x2301/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/design voices-shanksville-1029999682-crop-5b96945f46e0fb002541183a.jpg src=//:0 alt=tall, dainty stone ringer tower in a field of blossoms class=lazyload information click-tracked=true information img-lightbox=true information expand=300 id=mntl-sc-square image_1-0-40 information following container=true /> The Tower of Voices in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Like the dividers of the 1922 Lincoln Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknowns is built with brilliant white marble from the Yule Quarry in Colorado. Neoclassical pilasters, wreaths speaking to the significant skirmishes of World War I, and Grecian figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor embellish the marble boards. Book Review TOEFL Power Vocab (The Princeton Review)
Book Review TOEFL Power Vocab (The Princeton Review) My Grade for TOEFL Power Vocab: C+TOEFL Vocabulary is a funny topic. I mostly teach TOEFL writing. When I am working with students on their essays, I usually stress that they should not try to utilize advanced vocabulary in their essays. Instead, I usually encourage them to improve their writing score by using a wide range of easy words in their essays. Basically, the TOEFL e-rater, I believe, is more concerned with how many different words students use, rather than how difficult the words are. Obviously, of course, the vocabulary level matters to some extent, but I mostly encourage students to use words they already know. This means that they dont really need a TOEFL vocabulary book.Reading is a slightly different story. I think that studying vocabulary books is a great long-term strategy for students. Expanding their vocabulary is a great way to increase their comprehension of the reading passages. Probably the listening passages too, now that I think about it.By long-term I mean t hree months or more. If students have less than three months to prep for the test, they probably dont need a vocabulary book either. It just wont make a huge difference in such a short period of time.So is Princeton Reviews TOEFL Power Vocab a good vocabulary book?Sort of.At first glance I really wanted to like this book. It is really just 800 words (sorted alphabetically) with concise definitions and some short quizzes every few pages. It is free of any useless clutter. I would rather have 8000 words, but 800 seems to be as much as any book has nowadays (Kaplan includes about the same amount in their vocabulary book). The words are relevant, too. But the problem is that too many of them are way too easy. Most students who are already scoring 80 points and above will probably already know them. For instance, here are the words from a random page (172): suggest, suitable, summarize, summon, support, supposed, surpass, surprised, surrounded.I wouldnt exactly call those examples of powe r vocabulary.Another random page (121): imply, important, impressive, inactive, incandescent, inconspicuous, increase, increasingly.A less random page (69): circumspect, circumstances, circumvent, clamor, classified, clearly, climactic, coincidence.I think you get the point. Some of these words will really benefit students, but quite a few of them are just a waste of their time.I am on the hunt for a good vocabulary book and will try to review a few more in the months ahead, so please let me know if you have any favorites. Im all ears.

The Stupidest Angel Chapter 6 Free Essays
Chapter 6 BE OF GOOD CHEER; THEY MIGHT HAVE PUT A TREE UP YOUR BUM The Archangel Raziel found, after some consideration, that he did not care for being run over by a Swedish automobile. As far as things à «dirtsideà » went, he liked Snickers bars, barbecued pork ribs, and pinochle; he also enjoyed Spider-Man, Days of Our Lives, and Star Wars (although the concept of fictional film eluded the angel and he thought they were all documentaries); and you just couldnââ¬â¢t beat raining fire on the Egyptians or smiting the bejeezus out of some Philistines with lightning bolts (Raziel was good with weather), but overall, he could do without missions to Earth, humans and their machines in general, and (now) Volvo station wagons in particular. His broken bones had knit nicely and the deep gouges in his skin were filling in even as he came upon the chapel, but all things considered, he could go a very long time not being run over by a Volvo again and feel just dandy about it. We will write a custom essay sample on The Stupidest Angel Chapter 6 or any similar topic only for you Order Now He brushed at the all-weather radial tire print that ran up the front of his black duster and across his angelic face. Licking his lips, he tasted vulcanized rubber, thinking that it wouldnââ¬â¢t be bad with hot sauce or perhaps chocolate sprinkles. (There is little variety of flavors in heaven, and an abundance of bland white cake has been served to the heavenly host over the eons, so Raziel had fallen in the habit of tasting things while dirtside, just for the contrast. Once, in the third century B.C., he had consumed the better part of a bucket of camel urine before his friend the Archangel Zoe slapped it out of his hand and informed him that it was, despite the piquant bouquet, nasty.) This wasnââ¬â¢t his first Nativity mission. No, in fact, he had been given the assignment of the very first Nativity mission, and due to having stopped on the way to play some pinochle, heââ¬â¢d shown up ten years late, announcing to the prepubescent Son himself that he ââ¬Å"would find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.â⬠Embarrassing? Well, yes. And now, some two thousand years later, he was on another Nativity mission, and he was sure now that heââ¬â¢d found the child, that this one was going to go much more smoothly (for one thing, there were no shepherds to frighten ââ¬â heââ¬â¢d felt bad about that back then). No, come Christmas Eve the mission would be accomplished, heââ¬â¢d grab a plate of ribs and head back to heaven lickety-split. But first he needed to find the site for the miracle. There were two sheriffââ¬â¢s cruisers and an ambulance outside the Barker house when Theo arrived. ââ¬Å"Crowe, where the hell have you been?â⬠the sheriffââ¬â¢s deputy was yelling before Theo was even out of the Volvo. The deputy was the second-shift commander; Joe Metz was his name. He had a linebacker frame that he augmented with weight lifting and marathon beer drinking. Theo had encountered him a dozen times in as many years. Their relationship had gone from a mild disregard to an open disrespect ââ¬â which was pretty much Theoââ¬â¢s relationship with everyone in the San Junipero County Sheriffââ¬â¢s Department. ââ¬Å"I saw the suspect and made pursuit. I lost him in the woods about a mile east of here.â⬠Theo decided he wasnââ¬â¢t going to mention what heââ¬â¢d actually seen. His credibility was thin enough with the sheriffââ¬â¢s department. ââ¬Å"Why didnââ¬â¢t you call it in? We should have units all over the area.â⬠ââ¬Å"I did. You do.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t hear the call go in.â⬠ââ¬Å"I called it in on my cell. My radioââ¬â¢s broken.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t I know about it?â⬠Theo raised his eyebrows as if to say, Perhaps because youââ¬â¢re a big no-necked dumb-ass. At least thatââ¬â¢s what he hoped the gesture said. Metz looked at the radio on his belt, then turned to disguise his action as he turned a switch. Immediately the voice of the dispatcher came on, calling out for the shift commander. Metz keyed the mike clipped to the epaulet of his uniform shirt and identified himself. Theo stood by, trying not to smile as the dispatcher reported the entire situation again. Theo wasnââ¬â¢t worried about the two units that were headed to the woods up by the chapel. He was sure they werenââ¬â¢t going to find anyone. Whoever the guy in black was, he had a way of disappearing, and Theo didnââ¬â¢t even want to think of the means by which he did it. Theo had gone back to the chapel, where heââ¬â¢d caught a glimpse of the blond man moving through the woods before he was gone again. Theo had called home to make sure that Molly was okay. She was. ââ¬Å"Can I talk to the kid?â⬠Theo asked. ââ¬Å"When the EMTs are done looking at him,â⬠Metz said. ââ¬Å"The motherââ¬â¢s on the way. She was out to dinner with the boyfriend in San Junipero. Kid seems okay, just real shaken up, some bruises on his arms where the suspect picked him up, but no other injuries I could see. Kid couldnââ¬â¢t say what the guy wanted. Thereââ¬â¢s no property missing.â⬠ââ¬Å"You get a description?â⬠ââ¬Å"The kid keeps giving us names of characters from video games for comparison. What do we know from ââ¬ËMung-fu, the Vanquishedââ¬â¢? You get a good look at him?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠Theo said, forcing a lump out of his throat, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d say Mung-fu is pretty accurate.â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t fuck with me, Crowe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Caucasian, long blond hair, blue eyes, clean-shaven, six foot two, one-eighty, wearing a black duster that goes to the ground. I didnââ¬â¢t see his shoes. Dispatch has it all.â⬠Theo kept thinking of the deep gouges in the blond guyââ¬â¢s cheeks. He had started to think of him as the ââ¬Å"ghost-bot.â⬠Video games ââ¬â right. Metz nodded. ââ¬Å"Dispatch says heââ¬â¢s on foot. Howââ¬â¢d you lose him?â⬠ââ¬Å"The woods are thick up there.â⬠Metz was looking at Theoââ¬â¢s belt. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s your weapon, Crowe?â⬠ââ¬Å"I left it in the car. Didnââ¬â¢t want to scare the kid.â⬠Without a word, Metz stepped over to Theoââ¬â¢s Volvo and opened the passenger-side door. ââ¬Å"Where?â⬠ââ¬Å"Pardon?â⬠ââ¬Å"Where in your unlocked car is your weapon?â⬠Theo felt the last of his energy flow out of him. He just wasnââ¬â¢t good at confrontation. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s at my house.â⬠Metz smiled now like the bartender had just announced pitchers all around, on the house. ââ¬Å"You know, you might be the perfect guy to go after this suspect, Theo.â⬠Theo hated it when the sheriffs called him by his first name. ââ¬Å"Whyââ¬â¢s that, Joseph?â⬠ââ¬Å"The kid said he thought the guy might be retarded.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t get it,â⬠Theo said, trying not to grin. Metz walked away shaking his head. He climbed into his cruiser, then as he was backing past Theo, the passenger window whirred down. ââ¬Å"Write up a report, Crowe. And we need to get a description of this guy to the local schools.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Christmas break.â⬠ââ¬Å"Dammit, Crowe, theyââ¬â¢ll be going back to school sometime, wonââ¬â¢t they?â⬠ââ¬Å"So you donââ¬â¢t think your guys will catch him, then?â⬠Without another word Metz whirred up the window and whipped the cruiser out of the driveway as if heââ¬â¢d just received an urgent call. Theo smiled as he walked up to the house. Despite the excitement and terror and outright weirdness of evening, he suddenly felt good. Molly was safe, the kid was safe, the Christmas tree was up at the chapel, and there was just no rush that compared to safely and successfully fucking with a pompous cop. He paused on the top step and considered for a moment that perhaps, after fifteen years in law enforcement himself, he really should have matured past that particular pleasure. Nah. ââ¬Å"Did you ever shoot anybody?â⬠asked Joshua Barker. He was sitting on a bar stool at the kitchen counter. A man in a gray uniform was fussing medical over him. ââ¬Å"No, Iââ¬â¢m an EMT,â⬠said the EMT. He ripped the blood-pressure cuff off Joshââ¬â¢s arm. ââ¬Å"We help people, we donââ¬â¢t shoot them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Did you ever put that blood-pressure thing around someoneââ¬â¢s neck and pump it till their eyes bugged out?â⬠The EMT looked at Theophilus Crowe, who had just entered the Barkersââ¬â¢ kitchen. Theo frowned appropriately. Josh turned his attention to the lanky constable, noting that he had a badge clipped to his belt but no gun. ââ¬Å"You ever shoot anybody?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠Theo said. Josh was impressed. Heââ¬â¢d seen Theo around town, and his mom always said hi to him, but he never thought he actually did anything. Not anything cool, anyway. ââ¬Å"None of these guys ever shot anyone.â⬠Josh gestured to the two deputies and the two EMTs stationed around the small kitchen, giving them a look that said the wussies! with the full disdain his soft seven-year-old features could muster. ââ¬Å"You kill the guy?â⬠he asked Theo. ââ¬Å"Yep.â⬠Josh didnââ¬â¢t really know where to go now. If he stopped asking questions, he knew that Theo would start asking questions, just like the sheriffs had, and he didnââ¬â¢t want to answer any more questions. The blond man had told him not to tell anyone. The sheriff said that the blond man couldnââ¬â¢t hurt him, but the sheriff didnââ¬â¢t know what Josh knew. ââ¬Å"Your mom is on the way, Josh,â⬠Theo said. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢ll be here in a few minutes.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know. I talked to her.â⬠To the EMTs and deputies, Theo said, ââ¬Å"Guys, can I talk to Josh alone a minute?â⬠ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re done here,â⬠the lead medic said, leaving immediately. Both the deputies were young and eager to be asked to do something, even if it was to leave the room. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll be outside writing this up,â⬠said the last one out. ââ¬Å"Sergeant Metz told us to stay until the mother got home.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thanks, guys,â⬠Theo said, surprised at their congeniality. They must not have been on the department long enough to learn to look down on him for being a town constable, an archaic and redundant job, if you asked most area cops. Once they were gone he turned to Josh. ââ¬Å"So tell me about the man who was here.â⬠ââ¬Å"I told those other police.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know. But you need to tell me. What happened. Even the weird stuff you didnââ¬â¢t tell them.â⬠Josh didnââ¬â¢t like the way Theo seemed to be ready to believe anything. He wasnââ¬â¢t being too nice, or talking baby talk like the others. ââ¬Å"There wasnââ¬â¢t any weird stuff. I told them.â⬠Josh nodded as he spoke, hoping heââ¬â¢d look more convincing. ââ¬Å"None of that bad touch stuff. I know about that. None of that.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t mean that kind of stuff, Josh. I mean weird stuff you didnââ¬â¢t tell them because itââ¬â¢s unbelievable.â⬠Josh really didnââ¬â¢t know what to say now. He considered crying, did a test sniffle just to see if he could get things flowing. Theo reached out and took his chin, lifted it so Josh had to look him in the eye. Why did adults do that? Now heââ¬â¢d ask something that would be really hard to lie about. ââ¬Å"What was he doing here, Josh?â⬠Josh shook his head, mostly to get out of Theoââ¬â¢s grip, to get away from that adult lie-detector look. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. He just came in and grabbed me and then he left.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why did he leave?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know, I donââ¬â¢t know. Iââ¬â¢m just a kid. Because heââ¬â¢s crazy or something. Or maybe heââ¬â¢s retarded. Thatââ¬â¢s how he talks.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Theo said. ââ¬Å"You do?â⬠He did? Theo leaned in close. ââ¬Å"I saw him, Josh. I talked to him. I know he wasnââ¬â¢t like a normal guy.â⬠Josh felt like heââ¬â¢d just taken his first deep breath since he left Samââ¬â¢s house. He didnââ¬â¢t like keeping secrets ââ¬â sneaking home and lying about it would have been enough, but witnessing the murder of Santa, and then that strange blond guy showing up. But if Theo already knew about the blond guyâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"So, so, you saw him glow?â⬠ââ¬Å"Glow? Shit!â⬠Theo stood up and spun around as if heââ¬â¢d been hit in the forehead with a paintball. ââ¬Å"He glowed, too? Shit!â⬠The tall man was moving like a grasshopper locked in a running microwave. Not that Josh would know what that was like, because that would be a cruel thing to do and he would never do something like that, but, you know, someone told him about it once. ââ¬Å"So he glowed?â⬠Theo asked, like he was trying to get this straight. ââ¬Å"No, I didnââ¬â¢t mean that.â⬠Josh needed to back out of this. Theo was trippinââ¬â¢. Heââ¬â¢d had enough of adults trippinââ¬â¢ for one night. Soon his mom would come home to find a bunch of cops in her house and the trip to beat all trips would start. ââ¬Å"I mean he was really mad. You know, like glowing mad.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not what you meant.â⬠ââ¬Å"It isnââ¬â¢t?â⬠ââ¬Å"He really glowed, didnââ¬â¢t he?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, not constantly. Like, for a little while. Then he just stared at me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why did he leave, Josh?â⬠ââ¬Å"He said he had what he needed now.â⬠ââ¬Å"What was that? What did he take?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know.â⬠Josh was beginning to worry about the constable. He looked like he might hurl any second. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re sure you want to go with the glowing thing, Constable Crowe? I could be wrong. Iââ¬â¢m a kid. We make notoriously unreliable witnesses.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢d you hear that?â⬠ââ¬Å"CSI.â⬠ââ¬Å"Those guys know everything.â⬠ââ¬Å"They have the coolest stuff.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠said Theo wistfully. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t get to use cool cop stuff like that, huh?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠Theo was sounding really sad now. ââ¬Å"But you shot a guy, right?â⬠Josh said cheerfully, trying to raise Theoââ¬â¢s spirits. ââ¬Å"I was lying. Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Josh. Iââ¬â¢d better go. Your mom will be home soon. You just tell her everything. Sheââ¬â¢ll look out for you. The deputies will stay with you until she gets here. See ya, kiddo.â⬠Theo ruffled his hair and started out of the kitchen. Josh didnââ¬â¢t want to tell her. And he didnââ¬â¢t want Theo to go. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s something else.â⬠Theo turned and looked back at him. ââ¬Å"Okay, Josh, Iââ¬â¢ll stick around ââ¬â ; ââ¬Å"Someone killed Santa Claus tonight,â⬠Josh blurted out. ââ¬Å"Childhood ends too soon, doesnââ¬â¢t it, son?â⬠Theo said, putting his hand on Joshââ¬â¢s shoulder. If Josh had had a gun, heââ¬â¢d have shot him, but being an unarmed kid, he decided that of all of these adults, the goofy constable might just be the one who would believe what he had seen happen to Santa. The two deputies had come into the house with Joshââ¬â¢s mother, Emily Barker. Theo waited until she had hugged most of the breath out of her son, then reassured her that everything was okay and made a quick escape. As he came down the porch steps, he saw something yellow shining by the front tire of his Volvo. He looked back to make sure that neither of the deputies was looking out, then he crouched before the front tire and reached up into the wheel well and pulled out a hank of yellow hair that had caught in the black vinyl dent molding. He quickly shoved it into his shirt pocket and climbed into the car, feeling the hair throbbing against his chest like a living thing. The Warrior Babe of the Outland admitted that she was powerless without her medication and that her life had become unmanageable. Molly checked off the step in Theoââ¬â¢s little blue Narcotics Anonymous book. ââ¬Å"Powerless,â⬠she muttered to herself, remembering the time when mutants had chained her to a rock in the den of the behemo-badger in Outland Steel: Kendraââ¬â¢s Revenge. If not for the intervention of Selkirk, the rogue sand pirate, her entrails would even now be curing on the salt stalagmites of the badgerââ¬â¢s cave. ââ¬Å"That would sting, huh?â⬠said the Narrator. ââ¬Å"Shut up, that didnââ¬â¢t really happen.â⬠Did it? She remembered it like it did. The Narrator was a problem. The problem, really. If it had just been a little erratic behavior, she might have been able to wing it until the first of the month and go back on her meds without Theo noticing, but when the Narrator showed up, she knew she needed help. She turned to the Narcotics Anonymous book that had been Theoââ¬â¢s constant companion when he was battling his pot habit. He talked about working the steps all the time, and how he couldnââ¬â¢t have done it without them. She needed to do something to reinforce the rapidly blurring line between Molly Michon, party planner, cookie baker, the retired actress, and Kendra, mutant slayer, head breaker, the warrior temptress. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËStep two, â⬠she read. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËCome to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity. â⬠She thought for a moment and looked out the front window of the cabin for the lights from Theoââ¬â¢s car. She really hoped she could get through all twelve steps before he got home. ââ¬Å"Nigoth the Worm God shall be my higher power,â⬠she declared, snatching her broken broadsword from the coffee table and waving it in defiance at the Sony Wega TV that mocked her darkly from the corner. ââ¬Å"In Nigothââ¬â¢s name shall I sally forth, and woe unto any mutant or sand pirate that crosses my path, for his life shall be sacrificed and his bloody balls shall decorate the totem tree of my lodge.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the wicked shall cower before the grandeur of your dirt-striped and well-shaped thighs,â⬠said the Narrator, with robust enthusiasm. ââ¬Å"Goes without saying,â⬠Molly said. ââ¬Å"Okay, step three. ââ¬ËTurn your life over to God as you understand Him. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Nigoth requires a sacrifice,â⬠cried the Narrator. ââ¬Å"A limb! Cut it from your body and impale it still twitching upon the worm godââ¬â¢s fiery purple horn.â⬠Molly shook her head to rattle the Narrator around a little. ââ¬Å"Dude,â⬠she said. Molly seldom à «dudedà » anyone. Theo had picked up the word on his patrol of Pine Coveââ¬â¢s skateboard park and now used it generally to express incredulity at the audacity of someoneââ¬â¢s statement or behavior ââ¬â the correct inflection on the word would convey Doood, please, youââ¬â¢ve got to be joking or hallucinating, or both, to even suggest such a thing. (Lately Theo had been doing some testing on ââ¬Å"Yo, datââ¬â¢s wack, yo.â⬠But Molly had forbade its use outside of the house, for, as she pointed out, there is little more off-putting than the sound of hip-hop vernacular coming out of the mouth of a white, fortysomething, goony bird of a man. ââ¬Å"Albatross of a man, yo,â⬠Theo had corrected.) Thusly duded, the Narrator bid devotion down. ââ¬Å"A finger, then! The severed finger of a Warrior Babe ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Not a chance,â⬠Molly said. ââ¬ËA lock of hair! Nigoth requires ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I was thinking Iââ¬â¢d light a candle to symbolize that Iââ¬â¢m turning myself over to my higher power.â⬠And to illustrate her sincerity, she took a disposable lighter off the coffee table and lit one of the scented candles she kept on a tray at the tableââ¬â¢s center. ââ¬Å"A snotty Kleenex, then!â⬠tried the Narrator. But Molly had moved on to step four in the book. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËMake a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourself. I have no idea what that means.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢ll be fucked in the ear by a blind spider monkey if I get it,â⬠said the Narrator. Molly decided not even to acknowledge the Narrator on that one. After all, if the steps worked like she hoped they would, the Narrator was not going to be around for much longer. She dug into the little blue book in search of clarification. Upon further reading, it appeared that you were supposed to make a list of all the things wrong with your character. ââ¬Å"Put down that youââ¬â¢re fucking nuts,â⬠said the Narrator. ââ¬Å"Got it,â⬠Molly said. Then she noticed that the book recommended making a list of resentments. She wasnââ¬â¢t exactly sure what she was supposed to do with them, but in fifteen minutes she had filled three pages with all variety of resentments, including both parents, the IRS, algebra, premature ejaculators, good housekeepers, French automobiles, Italian luggage, lawyers, CD packaging, IQ tests, and the fucktard who wrote the ââ¬Å"Caution, pastry may be hot when heatedâ⬠warning on the Pop-Tarts box. She paused for a breather and was reading ahead to step five when headlights swept across the yard and raked the front of the cabin. Theo was home. â⬠ââ¬ËStep five, â⬠Molly read. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËConfess to our higher power and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. ââ¬Å" As Theo came through the door, Molly, her broken broadsword in hand, spun from the cinnamon candle of Nigoth the Worm God and said, ââ¬Å"I confess! I did not file taxes for the years ninety-five through two thousand, I have eaten the radioactive flesh of mutants, and I resent the hell out of you for not having to squat when you pee. ââ¬Å"Hi, honey,â⬠Theo said. ââ¬Å"Shut up, grommet,â⬠said the Warrior Babe. ââ¬Å"So I guess Iââ¬â¢m not going to get my Volvo washed?â⬠ââ¬Å"Quiet! Iââ¬â¢m confessing over here, ingrate.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the spirit!â⬠said the Narrator. How to cite The Stupidest Angel Chapter 6, Essay examples

Schoolwork, Paid Jobs, and Leisure Activities an Example of the Topic All Posts by
Schoolwork, Paid Jobs, and Leisure Activities There is a substantial discrepancy in the "number of hours" adolescents or young people use up in compensated employment "across different countries" (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). Need essay sample on "Schoolwork, Paid Jobs, and Leisure Activities" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed In fact, young people in the United States work more hours as compared to the others living in other countries (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). In addition to that, according to official tabulation, young people whose gender are biologically males work more than that of the females; the females are usually helping out in their houses own chores, which is usually an unpaid job, of course (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). Meanwhile, statistical information gathered show that young people from "China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Taiwan" utilize ten percent more time on studying as compared with those in the United States (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). In fact, young people in "China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Taiwan" utilize five and a half hours to seven and a half hours focusing only on "schoolwork" while those in the United States only spare three to four and a half hours for it (Santrock, 2008, p. 432). On the other hand, in terms of time spent on "leisure activities", young people who dwell in "China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Taiwan" spend only twenty five to thirty five percent of their time on such (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). Young people in Europe however spend approximately thirty five to forty five percent of their time on "leisure activities" (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). The aforementioned is much lesser than the time spent by young people in the United States since they spend forty to fifty percent on "leisure activities" (Santrock, 2008, p. 431). For instance, young people in the United States hang out with their friends/acquaintances a lot, they also play games/sports, engage in hobbies, use different forms of "media", and interact with others by joining certain organizations (Santrock, 2008, p. 432). This is much different with the manner East Asian young people spend their "leisure time" (Santrock, 2008, p. 432). Young people, then in the US and other regions of the world differ in terms of the time they spend on "schoolwork, compensated jobs, as well as, leisure activities". Reference Santrock, J. (2008).
